ART 's

Matariki

We have been investigating and learning about Matariki and the legend of the 7 stars. there are lots of ways the stars have been used by people, particularly the Early moro people. the used the stars to help them navigate their way around  to plant their crops, make stories and legends. the stars are seen in the sky in early may and late june.

When celebrating Matariki some people fly kites. Here is a video of some amazing kites being flown to celebrate the season of Matariki.

Well done Room 4, they received a Merit award for their class sculpture.
The judges said we had the best use of recycled materials.

Our butterfly was the largest sculpture hanging up. It looked really cool!

Lets go for GOLD next year.

Room 7 also entered a sculpture. Their spider looks great!

Here are some more of the entries from other schools.

A BIG thank you to every one who went along to the exhibition at the Gardens.

Sculpture

Monday
Today we began work on our sculpture. We all got 2 sets of grids to design the body parts. Both grids had to be shaped to make the shape of the body of the butterfly and the wings.

Once we had done that, we had to work out what patterns or colours we would like in the design.

Tuesday

We shaped the steel mesh to match the shapes on our grid.

We did this by cutting the mesh and then squashing it into shape with our feet.
We had to be careful because the ends of the mesh were very sharp. We made a round tube for the body and then a flat shape that would be the wings.

Wednesday

Then we began to decorate the body shape. First we weaved the top (head) and bottom (tail) of the body section.

We did this by weaving in and out of the squares. We used a paper clip as a needle. Then we cut up small pieces and we tied them onto the wire so that the body had texture and was fluffy to look at.

Week 2

Monday
We began to weave the blue colour through the wings. it took a very long time to do this.

We kept getting our stings of recycled blue plastic stuck and then it would break. Everyone helped out.

 Wednesday

We coloured in the spots and had to finish the blue weaving.

Friday

We finished the body and then had to add the features. We did some research on the computer and found that a caterpillar has wings and a body. It also has 6 legs, 2 antennae, 2 eyes and a mouth that works like a straw. We learnt that butterflies do not eat. they can only drink. they get nectar form the flowers and suck it up with their straw like tongue.

Can you see our butterflies eyes?    Antennae?   Straw tongue?

We still have to add our wings and our 6 legs.

Music

We were lucky to be visited by a mobile recording studio, Jambus, last week. Our class was involved in creating a CD. We sang theAlphabet song that we sing to remind us of the letter names and sounds.

Maria was our announcer and use introduced our song.

The man from 'Jambus' explained to us how we would go about recording the song. he said it was a bit like being on the programme X factor- that we were the people in the room and the man with the computer who takes the recording, is usually behind a glass screen.

We had to sing into microphones.

Then the sound went to the computer to get mixed.

We had to repeat some of our song as the microphone is very sensitive and it was picking up lots of noises from our feet and from outside.

The sound came out of the speakers.

Our song has NZ sign language signs that go with each letter. The man form Jambus was really impressed that we knew how to sign that he took a video of us while we were singing as well.

Our CD comes out in about two weeks. We are really excited to have made a CD. We will give it to our families as a surprise for Easter.

  1. What a cool CD. We listened to it as soon as we got home on Thursday. I love Maria's introduction - it was so clear. I loved the song, and was trying hard to listen for my girl. A great idea

  2. We visited The Botanical Gardens for the Wearable Art show and saw Room 7's butterfly. It looked so neat hanging from the ceiling. Although that one didn't win a prize, we were pleased to see that another RPS model won a Merit Award. It was fun hearing about the progress of the butterfly every day. Good work Room 7
